2026 Annual Meeting Recap

May 14–16, 2026 | The Cliffs Resort, Pismo Beach, California

The West Coast Chapter returned to The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach, California, for its 42nd Annual Meeting. Over the years, The Cliffs has hosted many of our annual meetings and does not disappoint.

Golf Tournament at Cypress Ridge

This year’s golf tournament returned to Cypress Ridge, a beautiful course that offered an enjoyable challenge for participants. We want to thank the sponsors and golfers who made the event a success and offer special recognition to Josh Keough of Watson and Scott Laurance of OCI Drilltools for organizing the tournament.

Board Meeting

For many years, our board meetings have been held on Saturdays. This year, we had the winter meeting on a Friday, and we moved the annual meeting to Thursday after golf – everyone likes the new schedule and agree to no more Saturday meetings!  The two Associate Presentations were also moved from the board meeting to Friday’s Education Session, providing a larger audience for those presentations.

In addition to the regular committee reports, members elected two new directors to the board. We thank Matt Jannings of Pacific Foundation and Tait McCutchan of Malcolm Drilling for their service, and we welcome Nathan Tourtellotte of Malcolm Drilling Company and Brad Hutton of Pacific Foundation as new directors.

The 2026–2027 WCC Board of Directors includes President Ashley Mahaffey Tullius (Don H. Mahaffey Drilling), Vice President Aaron Thomas (Keller, N.A.), Secretary Nathan Tourtellotte (Malcolm Drilling Company), Treasurer Brad Hutton (Pacific Foundation), Director Ray Fassett (Condon-Johnson & Associates), and Director Raffaele Zuccolo (Center Rock Drilling).

Welcome Reception

The Welcome Reception provides an opportunity to welcome new attendees and reconnect with longtime friends. This year’s event featured music by FiddleJoe Patterson. Special thanks to Kim Zuccolo and Kathy Danache for helping with registration.

Education

Each Annual Meeting includes a full-day education session focused on topics that matter most to our members. This year, the chapter sponsored registration for a record 23 students and professors from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Irvine and covered lodging for all nine attendees from UC Irvine.

Organized by Ashley Mahaffey Tullius, this year’s program featured case studies and presentations centered on safety and practical industry insight.

The session featured a strong lineup of presentations and case studies, including several highlights. Ryan Turner of Caltrans opened with a compelling presentation on the Highway 1 Regent’s Slide project, featuring video that immediately engaged the audience. Steve Maddox of Forvis Mazars shared valuable insights into the use of AI in construction, and Ashley Mahaffey Tullius and the safety committee later applied some of those ideas in developing a draft safety video script. Additional case studies and project presentations, along with special presentations from David Gee of Cal/OSHA and Rick Marshall of ADSC, rounded out a highly informative day.

Auction and Dinner

We had another successful auction, which demonstrates the generosity of our members. We raised nearly $48,000 to support the WCC and the WCC IAF. We extend our gratitude to all donors and participants in the bidding process. Special thanks are due to our fundraising chair, Jeff Veilleux (PJ’s Rebar), and our skilled auctioneer, Jake Troutt (Foundation Technologies), for their significant contributions to the event.

President’s Awards:

Four past presidents—Steve Williams (Condon-Johnson & Associates), Will Gehrke (Case Pacific), Chuck Danache (Keller, N.A.), and Tait McCutchan (Malcolm Drilling)—presented outgoing board member awards to Tait McCutchan and Matt Jannings. The group also recognized the absence of past president and longtime WCC supporter Ray Fassett, who was unable to attend for health reasons. Ashley Mahaffey Tullius led a toast in his honor, wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
